SETI Chile Interview

Working on the internet provides the opportunity to meet people from all around the world, and I’ve gotten acquainted with Lourdes Cahuich, an astronomy and science enthusiast and translator from Mexico and Tiare Rivera from Chile, who is the editor of the SETI Chile website. They regularly translate Universe Today articles (and articles and podcasts from many other English-language sites) and post them on their website in Spanish, making space and astronomy news more accessible to more of the world. They both are working on a series of interviews with people involved in space and astronomy outreach, and I am honored that Lourdes wanted to interview me! You can read the interview here in English, or if you prefer, here en EspaƱol. I reveal all about how and why I started writing, and how I ended up at Universe Today.

Above is the English version of SETI.CL’s promo video.

  1. Great interview! I am inspired to do more astronomy outreach locally!

Several years ago I helped a friend take his 20″ Dobson scope to Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, which is where the Roger Fergusson Observatory is. They do a monthly public viewing and if you bring a scope and share with the public, admission is free! Well… that scope weighs about 350 pounds and took our two trucks to haul up the mountain. But what a ton of fun it was! We had HUNDREDS of people clamber up and down the 8 foot ladder to look at all kinds of things. Our plan was to do our own viewing after the crowds had thinned but were always too tired afterward! The biggest night was when TWO boyscout troops were camping there… maano man, I must have climbed up that ladder 400 times! (This Dobson was manually aligned for viewing)

So… I really like what you do and am inspired to get back into participating in public viewing! Thanx Nancy!

  2. Too right. UT would be very bleak indeed without Nancy.
Shhhh….No one tell Nancy about the job opportunity for Science Writer at NASA GSFC
Thanks for all the hard work.

  3. I can’t seem to open the interview. I keep getting a 403 forbidden error. Please help
