How Close Did Hurricane Bill Come to the US East Coast?

[/caption]
Hurricane Bill kept its distance from the US mainland, seemingly skirting along the eastern seaboard and fitting perfectly within the coastline curves on this NASA satellite image. Thankfully, the storm largely missed the eastern states, with the center of the storm well off the coast. It appears Bill will keep its distance from the Canadian coast as well. It has now been downgraded to a tropical storm, and is expected to weaken over the next 24 hours. As of late Sunday night, the storm had maximum sustained winds near 120 kilometers (75 miles) per hour with higher gusts. This image was taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite, taken at 2:00 p.m. EDT (14:00 UTC) on August 23, 2009.

  1. Lucky it was a near miss! Yikes, looking at images like that, im very glad I live in the lower southern Hemisphere where storms like that dont reach.

Still, id love to experience a real hurricane one day…

  2. Damn. Hurricanes occupy a special place in my heart. It’s nature not taking any crap from anyone.

  3. GekkoNZ – believe me, hurricanes, like Typhoons or Cylones are not much fun! I was raised in Miami Florida and experienced several hurricanes…

Most of my family there lived on boats and would sail up rivers to tie off inland which was the way to deal with the tidal surges and waves. They would then come to our house to weather out the storm(s). Although it was great having everybody together, there were tragedy’s. When My Great Aunt Lois’ boat sank and they lost EVERYTHING, or when trees in the back yard toppled into our neighbors house, it was no fun! Re-roofing anyone?

Also, in Hurricane Andrew, my sister and her husband and three kids had their house demolished around them. They survived by moving into an interior hallway and holding mattress’ over them. The kids were completely tramatized and experienced bad dreams for years!

  4. Oh yeah.. the fun part was getting out of school while the storms passed. Also beach combing afterwords was interesting – old bottles, bits of this an that. Although after one storm we came across a grounded sailboat. On board was the corpse of an old man who’d chosen to stay with his boat to ride out the storm – bad decision, more nightmares…
