Astronomy Cast Ep. 416: Fireballs from Space!

Every now and then we look up and see bright fiery balls falling from the sky. Don’t panic, these are just bolides. Sometimes they leave trails, sometimes they explode, and sometimes they survive all the way to the ground.

  1. Anybody know how to download this? As far as I can tell, the audio (I.e. “podcast” part) of Astronomy Cast isn’t available for downloading these days.

  2. 2001 Leonids were NOT a meteor shower.. they were a meteor STORM! We saw +/-1,000/hour! That night we actually HEARD the brighter fire balls! I had laid a blue plastic tarp on the road for one of our party to lay down on for observing. He said… “Hey! Did you hear that?” We all tried it… it was VERY cold that night, lots of static electricity in the air and very dry. The fireballs made sizzling scritchy sounds! Cool!
