- All over California - Various dates and times. - The website lists over 60 Mars viewing events at over 20 different locations in August and September 2003. These are all free and open to the general public. More info
Calistoga
- Clos pegase Winery and Vineyards - 9:30 pm, August 27 - This memorable occassion is labeled as "the Astrogastro Mars Event" Following a fully booked private dinner, telescopes from the San mateo County Astronomical Society will be brought for viewing. Astronomer Mike Ryan, past President of the Society will lecture and show a dedicated Power Point Presentation. Other amateur astronomers will also bring telescopes and offer information during the event. More info

- Airport - 6:00 pm, August 23 - 6 inch, 8 inch, 10 inch and 18 inch reflectors will be available.
Irvine
- UCI Observatory - 9:00 pm, August 27 - The UC Irivne Observatory and Orange County Astrnoomers are sponsoring a Visitor Night to view Mars at its closest approach. The 24" UCI telescope and approximately 10 other portable telescopes of various sizes will be available for viewing Mars and other celestial bodies. Slide shows discussing Mars and the Solar System will be given. More info

- Mt. Tamalpais State Park - 8:00 pm, August 30 - Lecture in the Mt. Theater by Dr. Ginny Gulick of NASA-Ames Research Center, "The New Era of Mars Exploration: Following the Water" followed by observing through telescopes in the Rock Spring Parking area. San Diego
- Reuben H Fleet Science Center, Balboa Park - 7:00pm, August 27 - If you would like to see this stunning event through a telescope in the company of knowledgeable and helpful astronomers, join us on the Prado in front of the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. Mars will rise within the hour. The San Diego Astronomy Association will have a variety of telescopes set up for you to observe our close neighbor in space as it rises. The telescopes will be there until at least 10:00 p.m., possibly later. There is no charge for this event. More info
- Tierra del Sol Dark-sky Site - Dusk, August 23/30 - The San Diego Astronomy Association (SDAA) will be having two special Public Star Parties on the two Saturday's on either side of Mars' closest approach/opposition. The club's Tierra del Sol dark-sky obvservation site in rural east San Diego County will open to the public on those evenings. As many as 50 scopes and their owners will be on hand, and the club's 22-inch Ritchey-Chretien reflector and 8-inch D&G refractor will be trained on the Red Planet for the evening.
