What is RSS?

All of the news content in Universe Today is available through various RSS news feeds. If you visit Universe Today regularly, or you're subscribed to any of the email newsletters, you should consider switching over to a feed reader to get your news. In fact, in a few years, I predict that this will be the main way that people receive their news from Universe Today.

There are a few reasons why this is better. By subscribing to a news feed, you're informed when there are new stories. You don't have to go back to a website several times to see if anything's updated. Also, it gives you one quick interface to stay on top of many websites. You can read more in less time. If I run across a story in an obscure website that I enjoy, I'll sign up to the feed, and it reminds me to visit it from time to time.

First, you need to get a some kind of feed reader software. If you just try and click on my RSS feed in your browser, you'll go to a page that explains ways you can subscribe to the feed. There are many programs that can subscribe to news feeds, and add-ons to email programs like Outlook or Thunderbird.

There are also web-based services you can use. My current favorite is Bloglines, which you sign up for, fill out the feeds you want to subscribe to, and then revisit Bloglines on a regular basis to see what are new stories.

Now check the websites that you visit regularly and check to see if they have an RSS feed. Usually you'll see a bright orange button that looks like this RSS Feed. If you've installed a feed reader software, you can usually click that link and you'll automatically subscribe to the news feed.

And make sure you add Universe Today's feed to your reader right away. :-) It's located at: http://www.universetoday.com/universetoday.xml

And while you're in a subscribing mood, check out my Podcast too.

If you have any questions at all about this process, don't hesitate to drop me an email and I'll walk you through it. I think it's that important.

Happy feed reading!
