MILITARY LAUNCHES SECRET SATELLITE
-------------------------
An Atlas 2AS rocket lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base on Saturday carrying a classified payload. Although the Air Force is tight-lipped about the purpose of the booster's satellite cargo, industry experts believe it was the first in a series of surveillance satellites that will replace the Naval Ocean Surveillance System (NOSS).

AIR FORCE DECIDES NOT TO FUND X PROGRAMS
-------------------------
The US Air Force announced on Friday that it will not pick up the cancelled X-33/34 programs, nor will it continue to fund the X-37 past September 2002. The Air Force considered picking up the programs after NASA dropped them earlier this year during a round of budget cuts. This decision effectively ends these programs.
