This new simulation, developed at universities in the United States, shows how a Mars-sized object struck the Earth 4.5 billion years ago, and ejected a hail of material which eventually eventually formed the Moon. This story was published in the journal Nature. They believe that the dust, radiated in space to form a building block of life, would stand a good chance of passing through the Earth's atmosphere without burning up. This theory supports the recently reported discovery of biological material in the high atmosphere by an Indian team of scientists. It is estimated that nearly 3,000 tonnes of space dust enter the Earth every day. The planet is the second found orbiting star 47 Ursae Majoris, and the astronomers believe it orbits at a similar distance to the planet Mars in our own Solar System. Astronomers have now discovered over 70 planets orbiting other stars.
