Over 5 hours after taking off from Barking Sands, Hawaii, NASA's 700kg Helios reached an altitude of 29,414 metres; however, it failed to reach the 30,480 metres they had set as a goal because of thinning air and slanting sunlight. Nicknamed "Orville", the craft was dropped from a balloon at an altitude of 30km above the NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA, where it floated down to a safe landing. If a future version of the airplane does make it to Mars, it will have a propeller capable of keeping it aloft in the thin Martian atmosphere.
