Whew. I had a lot of problems communicating from Helsinki, as I suspected - but I know exactly what I need to do next time to make it work. I had a great time, and I really loved the city. This is Friday's edition, but I'm actually sending it out on Saturday night. Now that Discovery has reached orbit, I highly recommend you watch their progress on your own through Nasa TV. Here's a list of sources you can use to watch it over the web. http://www.nasa.gov/ntv/ntvweb.html Fraser Cain Publisher Universe Today ************************************** -- UNIVERSE TODAY STORY SUMMARY -- * Discovery Launches on Mission STS-105 * Perseids Will Put on a Show Sunday * Genesis On Its Way to Collect Pieces of the Sun DISCOVERY LAUNCHES ON MISSION STS-105 ------------------------- The space shuttle Discovery made a picture-perfect launch Friday as it lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida while thunderstorms approached on the horizon. Starting Saturday, August 11 and peaking the morning of Sunday, August 12, anyone watching the sky under optimal conditions should be able to pick out over 80 meteors an hour - even if you live in the glare of the city lights, you should still be able to see many bright meteors. The Perseids are known for producing brightly coloured tails as they streak across the sky. The spacecraft, which will collect particles of the Sun's solar wind and return them back to Earth, cleared the Cape Canaveral launch pad on board a Boeing Delta II booster at 1613 GMT (12:13pm EDT) - it isn't expected to return home until September 2004.
