Although this wasn't an issue with the actual Genesis spacecraft itself, managers decided to hold the launch back to perform more tests. The launch has been rescheduled for July 31 at 2032 GMT (12:32pm EDT). Once in space, Genesis will collect samples of the solar wind and return them to Earth in 2004. Miller believes that he has found rhythms in the quantity of gasses given off in various experiments on the soils, which match the length of the Martian day. All life on Earth follow similar rhythms over the course of a day, so Miller believes the variances in the findings must be due to the presence of organisms. The team found that Altair's diameter is 14 percent greater at the equator than at the poles because it rotates once every 10.4 hours (our Sun rotates once every 30 days). The astronomers were able to make this precise measurement by using a technique known as interferometry, where the light from two or more telescopes is combined to act like one, giant telescope.
