Two new record setting quasars and information on the distribution of asteroids were announced here today by the members of the SDSS collaboration. The announcements took place at the American Astronomical Society meeting being held here this week. http://www.universetoday.com/html/articles/2001-0607a.html ITALIANS PLAN X-RAY POLARIMETER ------------------------- Italian astrophysicists now have a way to efficiently and effectively measure the polarization of X-rays coming from space. This would give X-ray astronomers a new way to view X-ray emitting objects such as quasars, active galaxies and some binary stars. A letter published in this week's edition of the journal Nature explains the advances which make this new detector possible. http://www.universetoday.com/html/articles/2001-0607b.html NASA SELECTS PROPOSALS FOR PLUTO MISSION ------------------------- NASA administrators selected two proposals on Wednesday for a possible upcoming mission to the planet Pluto. The original Pluto-Kuiper Express project was scrapped last year due to budget overruns, and the project was opened up to other proponents earlier this year. The winning teams, both from Colorado, will receive $450,000 of interim financing to conduct a three month feasibility study. The images were taken between 1996 and 2000, and in the final image, the planet is nearing the point where Earth-bound observers get the best view of the rings.
