A note from Fraser...

I asked if people wanted to help broadcast the January 9th, 2001, total lunar eclipse visible from Europe, Africa and Asia, and so far, I've only had a couple of people volunteer. We need more people, to help make sure that we account for potentially bad weather in some areas.

It doesn't require complex equipment. If you live in one of those areas and have a digital camera, a connection to the Internet, and a free evening (nothing more complex is necessary), then you can take part in this event. We could really use your help.

Here's NASA's information on the eclipse, as well as a map of the effected areas.

If you're looking for a way to bring more visitors to your website, now's your chance. You can expect lots of people to come to your site to see the eclipse.

It'll be fun... please don't make me beg.

Thanks,

-- UNIVERSE TODAY STORY SUMMARY --

* Shuttle Problems Will Delay Astronauts' Return
* Jupiter's North Pole Aurora

SHUTTLE PROBLEMS WILL DELAY ASTRONAUTS' RETURN
-------------------------
NASA engineers have uncovered damage in the space shuttle Discovery's thrusters which will need to be replaced. This unexpected problem will keep the shuttle on the pad for an extra two weeks, while engineers make the repairs. The crew of space station Alpha was supposed to catch a lift back to Earth on Discovery in February, but now it looks like they'll have to stay in orbit extra two weeks - this isn't too concerning, they have plenty of supplies.

JUPITER'S NORTH POLE AURORA
-------------------------
New photos from the Hubble Space Telescope show a beautiful curtain of glowing gas wrapped around Jupiter's north pole. This aurora is formed in the same way as our own Northern Lights, when the particles from the Sun interact with the magnetic field of the planet. What's also interesting, is that it's possible to see the glowing footprints of three of Jupiter's moons, Io, Ganymede, and Europa.
