The scientists who took the images propose that starlight from Merope decelerates some of the dust particles, leaving them behind as the nebula moves past the star. It's unknown whether the nebula will survive this encounter with Merope at all, or be completely disintegrated over time. Because it isn't taut like the other panel, NASA is worried it could tear or break during future shuttle missions. The hatches between the shuttle and space station Alpha are expected to open on Friday, when the two astronaut crews will shake hands in space for the first time. The latest taken show an image of Jupiter and Ganymede in the same frame, while a giant storm appears as a blackened bruise on the face of the largest planet in the solar system. Cassini will make its closest pass on December 30th.
