A note from the publisher...

Every now and then I get an email asking me if I think the Apollo landings were faked. Hah! Now I've got a good website to point people to when they ask.

A new astronomy book...

Video Astronomy - by Steve Massey, Thomas A. Dobbins, and Eric J. Douglass

At last, a complete guide to capturing images of the night sky on video! The authors, all experienced backyard skygazers and astronomical imagers, examine video technology past and present and demonstrate its many applications to astronomy. They explain how to use ordinary camcorders, "Web cams," and digital video cameras alone or coupled to telescopes to record images of the Moon and planets, deep-sky objects, and fleeting celestial events such as meteor showers, occultations, and eclipses. This newest entry in the Sky & Telescope Observer’s Guides series is lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color photos and diagrams.

ROCKET SCIENCE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
-------------------------
A new type of rocket technology being developed at the Advanced Space Propulsion Laboratory has the potential to cut the time needed to take humans to Mars in half! Jennifer Laing looks at this advance in space propulsion and talks to NASA Astronaut Dr. Franklin Chang Díaz, Director of the ASPL, about the benefits of this technology for long duration space flights.

DELTA ROCKET LAUNCHES AIR FORCE SATELLITE
-------------------------
A Boeing Delta 2 lifted off on Friday from Cape Canaveral carrying a US military navigation satellite into orbit. The launch occurred at 5:14pm GMT, and separation occurred 25 minutes later as the Lockheed Martin GPS satellite reached its final orbit. This GPS satellite joins the rest of the US Air Force constellation of ground navigation satellites, enabling the military (and others) to determine their exact position on the planet.

HOT STARS ARE MORE EXTREME THAT PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT
-------------------------
New images gathered by the Chandra X-Ray Observatory show the temperature inside brand new stars is much more intense than scientists previously suspected. Several young stars in the Orion Trapezium Cluster - a prime stellar nursery located in the Orion Nebula - get as hot as 60 million degrees, and give off X-rays 100,000 times more powerful than our own sun.
