* NASA Tests X-38 Escape Vehicle
* Space Station Might Get a New Name

NASA TESTS X-38 ESCAPE VEHICLE
-------------------------
NASA performed its latest test of the X-38 prototype escape vehicle by dropping it from the bottom of a B-52 aircraft over a dry lake bed in California. The X-38 will allow astronauts to evacuate from the International Space Station in case of an emergency, such as decompression of the station. A space test flight of the vehicle is planned for 2002, when it will be released in orbit by the space shuttle to fly back to Earth.

SPACE STATION MIGHT GET A NEW NAME
-------------------------
Once they moved in to the International Space Station yesterday, commander William Shepherd proposed to change its name to Alpha - the codename used during the station's early planning stages. The name isn't permanent, though; it has its critics. The Russians believe that Mir should be considered Alpha, and ISS should be Beta, or even Mir 2. A permanent name will have to wait until a later date.
