Fraser Cain Publisher Universe Today ************************************** -- UNIVERSE TODAY STORY SUMMARY -- * Expedition 1 Is Now Underway EXPEDITION 1 IS NOW UNDERWAY ------------------------- A Russian Soyuz rocket carrying the crew of Expedition 1 - the first permanent International Space Station inhabitants - launched early this morning from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. At 7:53am GMT, the Soyuz carried commander Bill Shepherd, and cosmonauts Sergei Krikalev and Yuri Gidzenko to an altitude of 368 kms. It will reach the station on Thursday, where the crew will have two days to get the life support systems operational.
