During the 6.5 hour trip outside, the astronauts installed equipment onto the station, and tested a new device called the Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue (SAFER) - a small thruster installed on the spacewalkers' backpacks which allows them to thrust back to the station if a tether breaks. Discovery is scheduled to return to Earth on Sunday. When the microbes were extracted from the crystals and placed in a nutrient solution, they revived and began to grow again. This discovery adds to the building evidence that life can exist in a tremendous variety of environments, and even survive during inhospitable times. Originally scheduled to launch early today on board a Ukrainian Zenit-3SL rocket, the launch has been rescheduled to tomorrow for 5:56am GMT. The Thuraya-1 is a telecommunications satellite built by Boeing, and will provide mobile telephone services to 100 countries.
