Space note...

Okay, "Destination Mir" has been sold to NBC (read the story below); no need to write those letters. I'll find out what the process is for getting into the contest, and publish what I find as soon as I can. Start training...

This show is going to have enormous impact on the popularization of space. Stay tuned.

DESTINATION MIR WILL LAUNCH ON NBC
-------------------------
Mark Burnett, producer of the hit show "Survivor", has sold the rights to his new show, "Destination Mir" to NBC for $40 million. The show will follow a group of 13-15 would-be cosmonauts as they train for a trip to the Mir space station. Each week, a contestant will be removed by Russian Space Officials until the final winner is launched into orbit on a special, live broadcast. Half of the money will go to MirCorp, to help cover the costs of the trip. As part of the deal, NBC has agreed to run an hour long, Burnett-produced show about Dennis Tito, the businessman who paid $20 million for the chance to fly on Mir next year. "Destination Mir" will air in late 2001, early 2002.

ASTRONAUTS START MOVING IN
-------------------------
The crew of the space shuttle Atlantis cracked open the doors to the brand new Zvezda service module this morning, and began to transfer in supplies. Within minutes of accessing Zvezda, the crew reported that the air quality and other conditions inside Zvezda were excellent. They'll spend the next hour days transferring supplies to the station: 2200kg from the shuttle, and 600kg from a docked Russian Progress ship.

DISCOVERY ROLLS ONTO THE PAD FOR ITS UPCOMING FLIGHT
-------------------------
NASA sees no rest as the next space shuttle rolls out onto the launch pad, while one is already in orbit. The space shuttle Discovery is preparing for its October 5th launch, which will occur only 2 weeks after Atlantis lands from its current mission. During its 10-day flight, the crew of Discovery will attach a new segment to the station called the Zenith, or Z-1, which will provide a pathway between the station and its power generating solar panels. This will be the 100th shuttle mission.

BOWSHOCK NEBULA DISCOVERED AROUND NEUTRON STAR
-------------------------
Astronomers using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope have discovered a neutron star 20 km across moving through space at 100 km/second. Its motion has caused a bowshock-shaped nebula to form around the neutron star (RX J1856.5-3754) as it interacts with the environment. In theory, intense gravity from the neutron star is pulling hydrogen down to the surface at half the speed of light - constant impacts by hydrogen atoms are causing the neutron star to heat up.
