A note from Fraser...

There's a new feature on Universe Today; although, I suspect it may draw me a little flak. If you take a look further down the newsletter, you'll see a link to "Related Books" for each story. Follow the link, and you'll see several print books that relate to the story. I've set links for each book to where you can buy it from Amazon.com (US), Chapters.ca (Canada), and Amazon.co.uk (UK). If anyone can recommend online book sellers from other countries, I'll join their affiliate programs, and link to them as well. If you choose to buy a book from them, the book seller sends a commission back to me. Win-win-win... right?

I'd thought of the idea (it isn't groundbreaking, I know) a year ago, but I figured people would just see it as useless SPAM. An attempt to "gasp" earn revenue from doing this work; so I held off. But during the recent user survey, several people suggested the idea as a way to help cover my costs. Well, that's all the encouragement I needed to set it up.

I've tried to do the best implementation of this as I can, while keeping it appropriate to the topic area, but if you see vital books missing, or you have other suggestions, please let me know at mailto:info@universetoday.com.

ATLANTIS CREW PERFORMS FIRST SPACEWALK
-------------------------
After docking with the International Space Station early Sunday morning, the crew of the space shuttle Atlantis went for a little stroll this morning. American astronaut Ed Lu and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko went for a six-hour spacewalk to attach a cable and install a boom for a navigation unit on the station. At one point, they were over 33 metres away from the shuttle. The crew will spend the week transferring supplies from the shuttle to the station, and will return back to Earth on September 19th.

SEA LAUNCH WINS CONTRACT FOR LORAL SATELLITE
-------------------------
Officials from Boeing's Sea Launch announced today that they had recently been awarded a contract to launch a Loral Telstar-8 satellite from their floating platform. Although Sea Launch suffered a failure back in April, another launch in July was a complete success, rebuilding customer confidence in the platform. The satellite will be launched in 2002.

GALILEO HELPS SOLVE PUZZLE OF JUPITER'S WINDS
-------------------------
New research based on data gathered by the Galileo spacecraft's entry probe indicates why Jupiter has surprisingly clear, dry areas near the equator. Some of these "holes" in the clouds are as tall as 100 kilometres. Based on the data from the probe, scientists at NASA's AMES Research Center have developed a computer simulation that recreates the conditions on Jupiter, and demonstrates how pressure differences and the movement of water and ammonia vapours create these gaps in the clouds.
