A Universe Today exclusive story. http://www.universetoday.com/html/special/farewellfather.html PROTON LAUNCHES RUSSIAN SATELLITE ------------------------- A Russian Proton rocket roared into the sky yesterday, carrying a Globus-1 spacecraft for the Russian Ministry of Defence. The launch occurred on Monday at the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 8:08pm. Little is known about the classified military payload, other than it will orbit at 37,000 kms and act as a communications relay for Russian military forces. Built by Hughes Space and Communications, the $250 million Solidaridad 1 suffered the loss of its Spacecraft Control Processor (SCP)- it was operating on its backup SCP after its original ceased functioning a year ago. The loss of this SCP caused the satellite to be unable to point its antennae and solar panels. Ground controllers have little hope that the satellite will be usable again.
