A quick note...

Thanks to everyone who participated in the eclipse, it was quite an event. I went out around 5:00am PDT and just watched the moon start to darken before it went down over the horizon, then I had to switch back to the computer, and watch it on the Internet like most of view. For our next trick, we'll be broadcasting the upcoming partial solar eclipse, which will be visible from Northwest Canada and Northern Asia on July 31st. More details coming...

The eclipse contest is still open, so if you haven't entered yet, now's your chance:

In other news, it's the 25th anniversary of the Mariner 4 spacecraft. Larry Klaes has written a special article about this historic mission. Read about it here:

NASA DOWNPLAYS SPACESUIT SCARE
-------------------------
While repairing a spacesuit's leaky oxygen regulator, NASA technicians discovered a potentially catastrophic design flaw in the spacesuit's emergency oxygen pack. Oil had leaked inside, and if there had been a spark while the oxygen was turned on, the suit would have burst into flames. It's believed the oil had been building up in all of NASA's ten spacesuits since as longs as 1992. Needless to say, NASA is working to remove the oil and determine the cause.

FIRST CLUSTER SATELLITES MAKE IT SAFELY TO ORBIT
-------------------------
A perfect launch of a Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on Sunday successfully placed two Cluster II safely into orbit - with only a one-day delay. The space weather satellites are replacements for a group lost in an Ariane 5 mishap in 1996. The next two satellites are due to launch August 9th with a similar rocket configuration. Once all four satellites are in orbit, they will fly in formation in an elliptical orbit and gather data on how the solar wind interacts with the Earth's magnetosphere.

NEW ASTRONOMY DATA AVAILABLE ON THE INTERNET
-------------------------
New images gathered by the Two-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) are now available for download on the Internet. These new images bring the total to half a million galaxies and 162 million stars. The 2MASS survey uses two highly automated 1.3 meter telescopes to cover the entire sky, taking images very quickly. The 2MASS data has been used by astronomers for many new discoveries, including uncovering some of the coolest brown dwarf stars.

DELTA 2 LAUNCHES GPS SATELLITE
-------------------------
A Boeing Delta II rocket launched from Cape Canaveral on Sunday, successfully placing the 29th Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite into a safe orbit.
