The rocket was carrying a research satellite. This is Brazil's second failure in attempting to put an object into orbit - but this was an improvement, and Brazilian space officials are hopeful they'll get it right eventually. http://cnn.com/1999/TECH/space/12/13/rocketdestroye.ap/index.html http://www.spacedaily.com/spacecast/news/brazil-99b.html http://www.spaceviews.com/1999/12/11b.html TECHNICIANS REPLACE BROKEN FUEL PIPE ------------------------- On Saturday, NASA technicians working on the Space Shuttle Discovery successfully replaced a damaged fuel pipe. The eight hour procedure went off without a hitch. The new launch date to fix the damaged Hubble Space Telescope has been set for Thursday. http://cnn.com/1999/TECH/space/12/11/shuttle.goldin/index.html BACTERIA DISCOVERED DEEP IN ANTARCTIC LAKE ------------------------- In support of the theory that life could have evolved on Europa, scientists have discovered tiny bacteria in a sample of ice 3,590 meters below the Antarctic surface. Although the sample was taken from the ice above Lake Vostok, they believe the lake has the bacteria as well. This environment is the closest known analogy to what the scientists suspect exists on Europa. http://www.msnbc.com/news/344801.asp http://www.spaceviews.com/1999/12/13a.html AIR FORCE LAUNCHES WEATHER SATELLITE ------------------------- The US Air Force launched a Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Block 5D-3 weather satellite on board a Titan II rocket. This was the ninth consecutive successful Titan II rocket launch, which took off from Vandenberg Air Force base. http://www.spacedaily.com/spacecast/news/dmsp-99d.html http://www.spaceviews.com/1999/12/12b.html ************************************** Space News from SpaceDaily.com for today Beyond Fast Cheap and Broke http://www.spacedaily.com/spacecast/news/mars-polar99-99t.html ESA Says Mars Won't Be Cheap http://www.spacedaily.com/spacecast/news/marsexpress-99g.html XMM Takes Self Portrait http://www.spacedaily.com/spacecast/news/nanosat-99g.html Titan 2 Launches Weather Bird For Air Force http://www.spacedaily.com/spacecast/news/dmsp-99d.html Brazil Blows Up Rocket http://www.spacedaily.com/spacecast/news/brazil-99b.html Federal Data Wins Zero-G Research Contract http://www.spacedaily.com/spacecast/news/microgravity-99k.html Enterprise Opens Up ISS To Commercial Space Race http://www.spacedaily.com/spacecast/news/spacehab-99b.html Missile Envy Dominates Asian Military Plans http://www.spacedaily.com/spacecast/news/korea-99q.html France Wins Taiwan EOSat http://www.spacedaily.com/spacecast/news/taiwan-99b.html To unsubscribe from this newsletter, just reply with only the subject line "UNSUBSCRIBE NEWSLETTER".
