A geological feature extending around the northern third of the planet looks like a giant bathtub ring, which could have been caused by waves lapping against an ancient Martian shore. http://abcnews.go.com/sections/science/DailyNews/mars_ocean991210.html http://www.spacedaily.com/spacecast/news/mars-water-99d.html ARIANE 5 LAUNCHES X-RAY TELESCOPE ------------------------- An Ariane 5 rocket launched successfully into orbit carrying the European Space Agency's XMM satellite - the largest x-ray telescope ever built. This is a historic launch, as it's the first time an Ariane 5 has been used for commercial purposes; it's also the largest satellite ever launched by the ESA. http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_558000/558370.stm http://cnn.com/1999/TECH/space/12/10/europe.ariane.01/index.html http://www.msnbc.com/news/329383.asp http://www.spacedaily.com/spacecast/news/xmm-99d.html http://www.spaceviews.com/1999/12/10b.html DISCOVERY'S LAUNCH PUSHED BACK ALMOST ANOTHER WEEK ------------------------- After investigating the dented fuel line discovered yesterday on the Space Shuttle Discovery, NASA engineers have decided to replace it. The process will take a couple of days, so the launch to repair Hubble has been pushed back to end of the week. The only constraint is that NASA wants to ensure Discovery returns before the end of the year - to avoid Y2K issues. http://cnn.com/1999/TECH/space/12/09/shuttle.delay.ap/index.html http://www.foxnews.com/science/120999/shuttle.sml http://www.msnbc.com/news/330873.asp SPACEHAB WORKING ON PRIVATE COMMERCIAL OUTPOST ------------------------- In partnership with Energia, Spacehab announced that they are working on a permanent commercial outpost which could be attached to the International Space Station as early as 2002. Spacehab estimates the module - dubbed Enterprise - will cost $100 million, and be used for private scientific research. http://www.msnbc.com/news/344792.asp ************************************** Space News from SpaceDaily.com for today Possible Mars Shoreline Found http://www.spacedaily.com/spacecast/news/mars-water-99d.html Europe Soars On Ariane 5 http://www.spacedaily.com/spacecast/news/xmm-99d.html Radiation Danger To ISS Construction Crews http://www.spacedaily.com/spacecast/news/iss-99r.html To unsubscribe from this newsletter, just reply with only the subject line "UNSUBSCRIBE NEWSLETTER".
