Tonight Dan Benedict, meteor-enthusiast and ephemerist, will talk to us about the coming storm. Plus...a special guest by phone will tell us about Leonid MAC'99, a NASA project to take stereoscopic images of the meteor storm from two airplanes flying in tandem. A team of amateur astonomers will be on one of them, counting those falling stars like crazy. Make a wish! Check it out at http://www.spacewatch.com ************************************** -- UNIVERSE TODAY STORY SUMMARY -- * Hubble Repair Mission Delayed Again * Astronomers Discover Planet Orbiting Two Stars * Galaxy Collided with Milky Way 10 Billion Years Ago * Next H-2 Launch Date Set HUBBLE REPAIR MISSION DELAYED AGAIN ------------------------ A decision to replace an engine on the Space Shuttle Discovery will cause a 3-5 day delay of its launch to repair the crippled Hubble Space Telescope. It seems that a piece of a drill bit fell into the engine while it was being serviced, and the agency has decided it won't take any chances - they're replacing the whole engine. http://abcnews.go.com/sections/science/DailyNews/hubble991103.html http://cnn.com/TECH/space/9911/03/shuttle.engine.02/index.html http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/110399/shuttle.sml http://www.msnbc.com/news/330873.asp http://www.flatoday.com/space/today/110499a.htm http://www.spaceviews.com/1999/11/03c.html ASTRONOMERS DISCOVER PLANET ORBITING TWO STARS ------------------------ Using a technique called gravitation microlensing, researchers at the University of Notre Dame have discovered a planet with the mass of three Jupiters orbiting a binary star system. This microlensing technique is also being used by the Massive Compact Halo Objects (MACHO) collaboration, which is attempting to search for "dark matter" in the universe. http://www.astronomynow.com/breaking/9911/03planet/index.html http://cnn.com/TECH/space/9911/03/space.planet.reut/index.html http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/110499/planets.sml http://www.msnbc.com/news/331009.asp http://www.spaceviews.com/1999/11/03b.html GALAXY COLLIDED WITH MILKY WAY 10 BILLION YEARS AGO ------------------------ Using data from the European Space Agency's Hipparcos Satellite, astronomers at the Max Planck Institute of Astrophysics in Garching, Germany discovered a number of stars moving in parallel orbits around the center of the Milky Way. They believe these stars are the remnants of a dwarf galaxy that collided with our own 10 billion years ago. http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/110399/galaxy.sml http://www.msnbc.com/news/330978.asp NEXT H-2 LAUNCH DATE SET ------------------------ After a series of launch delays, the Japanese space agency NASDA has announced that an H-2 carrying an MTSAT-1 navigation and weather satellite will be ready for launch on November 15th. The satellite was originally to launch in early August, and then September, but the rocket and satellite needed minor repairs. http://www.spaceviews.com/1999/11/03a.html To unsubscribe from this newsletter, just reply with only the subject line "UNSUBSCRIBE NEWSLETTER".
