-- UNIVERSE TODAY STORY SUMMARY --

* Four New Globalstar Satellites Launched
* Climate Orbiter Almost at Mars
* Sun Could Sterilize the Earth
* Universe Expanding Even Faster than Previously Thought

FOUR NEW GLOBALSTAR SATELLITES LAUNCHED
------------------------
Globalstar reached an important milestone today, with the addition
of 4 new satellites launched on board a Russian Soyuz rocket from
the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. This brings the total
to 40 satellites.

CLIMATE ORBITER ALMOST AT MARS
------------------------
The Mars Climate Orbiter will reach its target later today when it
performs a complex aerobraking maneuver to slow its speed, and begin
the process of placing the spacecraft into a stable Martian
orbit - which will take almost two months. The Climate Orbiter
will serve as a communications platform for the upcoming Polar
Lander mission as well as gather data on Martian weather.

SUN COULD STERILIZE THE EARTH
------------------------
By observing solar analogues - stars exactly like our own
sun - astronomers have seen several cases of "superflares". If one
of these flares erupted from our own sun, and happened to hit the
Earth, the damage would be catastrophic, destroying the ozone layer,
and permitting solar radiation to sterilize the planet.

UNIVERSE EXPANDING EVEN FASTER THAN PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT
------------------------
Using new calculations on Cepheids, giant pulsating stars used to
calculate distance to other galaxies, a international team of astronomers
have determined that the universe is expanding faster than previously
thought. This means that the universe is probably younger too.
