SUPERNOVA REMNANTS FOUND AROUND BLACK HOLE COMPANION
------------------------
When a massive star in the system GRO J1655-40 went supernova, it
blasted itself into its binary companion, and then shrunk into a black
hole. The black hole and its companion now rotate one another.
Astronomers at Berkley realized the black hole first went supernova
when they found higher than normal concentrations of heavy elements
in the companion star - it was hit with supernova shrapnel.

SHUTTLE ASTRONAUT REMOVED FROM UPCOMING MISSION
------------------------
Originally scheduled to launch on the space shuttle in May 2000,
astronaut Mark Lee - a veteran of four shuttle missions - has been
removed from the crew. NASA officials characterized Lee's removal
as a disciplinary action.

MARTIAN DUST DEVILS BETTER UNDERSTOOD
------------------------
Seen from orbit by the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft, scientists
had never seen Martian dust devils from the planet's surface... until
now. By filtering photographs taken by the Mars Pathfinder in 1997,
researchers have been able to identify five dust plumes, up
to 350 metres tall.

NASA'S SPACE STATION BUDGET SPARED
------------------------
Citing cost overruns, Reps. Tim Roemer and Mark Sanford led an effort
to cancel NASA's budget that would be allocated to the International
Space Station - the money would be redistributed within NASA, and
also be used to fund housing programs debt reduction. The vote
was defeated 121-298.
