CHANDRA IMAGES COMING THURSDAY
------------------------
After years of development, NASA astronomers are almost ready to begin using
the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, launched just a few weeks ago on the Space
Shuttle. NASA will unveil new images from the observatory at a press conference
on Thursday.

SEARCH FOR MARS LIFE BEGINS IN EGYPTIAN DESERT
------------------------
European Space Agency scientists have decided to begin searching for life
on Mars by testing their theories in the Western Desert in Egypt. It seems
the sand in this region closely resembles that found on Mars. The results
will be used when the Mars Express probe launches in 2003.

SCIENTISTS CAN'T EXPLAIN ARCS IN NEPTUNE'S RINGS
------------------------
When Voyager passed Neptune, it captured images of strange arcs in the
planet's rings. The arcs were originally explained as being caused by
gravitational interference from one of Neptune's moons, which causes
material in the ring to bunch up. But new evidence from Hubble calls
this theory into question.

JETS SEEN EMANATING FROM DISTANT STARS
------------------------
Astronomers using the Subaru telescope in Japan recently captured images
of a nearby binary star system emanating two jets of gas. It's believed
that the jets are caused by protostars in the system interacting with one
another as they form.

NASA WORKING ON NEW X-VEHICLES
------------------------
The Space Shuttle's days as the only spaceplane on the block may be numbered,
as NASA has announced they're working aggressively on the next generation of
reusable spacecraft: the X-33 VentureStar, which will be able to fly every
7 days; the X-34 rocket-plane, designed for launch from another airplane;
and the X-37 robotic mini-shuttle.

JAPANESE ROCKET MAY BE REMOVED FROM SERVICE
------------------------
Under pressure to tighten spending, Japan's space agency is planning to
eliminate the smaller of its domestic rockets - the J-1. They instead plan
to build a similar rocket using cheaper overseas parts for Russia, and the
United States.

SHUTTLE LAUNCH DELAYS ANNOUNCED
------------------------
The launch of the space shuttle Atlantis has been delayed because of work
on Endeavour and Discovery to search for the same damaged wire that nearly
caused an aborted launch with Columbia. There may also be additional delays
in the schedule because of conflicting launch windows.
