Astronomers were hoping to see a cloud of dust and ice rising from the collision which would provide evidence of water on the moon. http://abcnews.go.com/sections/science/DailyNews/mooncrash990731.html http://www.astronomynow.com/breaking/9907/31lunarprosp/index.html http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_409000/409157.stm http://cnn.com/TECH/space/9907/31/lunar.prospector.crash.04/index.html http://explorezone.com/archives/99_08/01_lunar_prospector.htm http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/073199/moonwater.sml http://www.msnbc.com/news/292829.asp http://www.flatoday.com/space/explore/stories/1999b/080199a.htm http://www.spacer.com/spacecast/news/water-99j.html http://www.spaceviews.com/1999/07/31a.html CHANDRA BOOSTS TO HIGHER ORBIT ------------------------ In the first of five orbital maneuvers it will make, the Chandra X-Ray observatory boosted its orbit so that the high point would take it nearly 68,000 kms away from the Earth (1/3 of the distance to the moon). Controllers have been systematically activating the observatory's systems with great success. http://www.astronomynow.com/breaking/9908/01chandra/index.html http://www.spacer.com/spacecast/news/bigbang-99h.html COLUMBIA FUEL LEAK CAUSE FOUND ------------------------ It turns out a loose pin from one of the Space Shuttle Columbia's engines possibly caused the fuel leak shortly after launch last week. Gold-plated, and only 1-inch long, the pin was knocked from its tube from the force of the engines firing, where it punched a hole in the engine nozzle. http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/073199/shuttle.sml http://www.msnbc.com/news/295542.asp http://www.spaceviews.com/1999/08/01a.html NASA'S BUDGETS MARGINALLY RESTORED ------------------------ After a day's budget hearings, the House Appropriations Committee has decided to restore some of NASA's slashed budget - $400 million. This still leaves total budget cuts, however, of $1 billion. http://www.spaceviews.com/1999/07/30d.html To unsubscribe from this newsletter, just reply with only the subject line "UNSUBSCRIBE NEWSLETTER".
