How Far is Pluto from the Sun?
Written by Fraser Cain

Pluto has an extremely eccentric orbit as it travels around the Sun. This means that its distance from the Sun changes a tremendous amount between its closest and its furthest from the Sun.
At its closest point, Pluto gets to within 4.4 billion km, or 30 astronomical units (1 astronomical unit, or AU is the distance from the Earth to the Sun).
At its furthest point, Pluto is 7.4 billion km from the Sun, or 49 AU.
Pluto's average orbital distance is 5.9 million km from the Sun, or 39 AU.
