Where to Buy Magnets
Written by Tega Jessa

Are you a science hobbyist or educator looking for great magnets? It normally can be difficult to find magnets for private consumption. Most magnets are sold for scientific research or in large bulk orders for industrial use. However, we at Universe Today did some digging and found some interesting websites that sell magnets to private citizens for wholesale prices. Of course these are only a sampling of the retailers out there, but they should give you an idea of what to look for.
The first company I came across was Applied Magnets. Their website is quite extensive and they sell just about every kind of magnet you can think of. From Neodymium magnets to ceramics, the have it all. The site also sells other items that might interest you. They also sell generator, electric motors, and even solar inverters as part of the green power part of their website. I was really impressed with all they had to offer individual customers.
The next company's website I checked out was Indigo Instruments. This website is geared more to educators than to the general public but the had a lot of the same items that I saw on the Applied Magnets website. The site was simple in design and pretty easy to navigate and had some great tools for class experiments.
Another company I researched was United Nuclear. The site was a bit amateurish but the had one of the biggest selections of small magnets I saw so far. The pricing was really good. The offered very good deals for large orders of small magnets starting at $30 more than enough to satisfy your curiosity with magnets or do class room experiments on the cheap.
The last stop on my perusal of magnet retailers and wholesalers was CMS Magnetics. The site looked very professional and had a clear list of all their selections. My favorite feature on this site was the best sellers list. If you are a novice at purchasing magnets this is a good place to start looking. It helps to see what other people bought to help guide your choices.
In the end, whatever site or store you buy magnets do some research. You need to determine what you want and what types of magnets are out there. Also be careful about getting strong magnets like neodymium all the sites I research carried warning about possible injury when using them. So think carefully when buying them.
If you enjoyed this article there are others that you might like on Universe Today. There is a great article on the Large Hadron Collider. There is also an interesting article about the LHC being used as a time machine.
