Pictures of Hawaii

Here are some cool pictures of Hawaii, from space.
Here's a picture of the Big Island of Hawaii, seen from space.
This picture of the Hawaiian islands was taken by NASA's Terra satellite. You can see how the islands break up the winds and clouds, creating turbulence behind them.

In this picture of Hawaii, you can see the Big Island of Hawaii. At the bottom of the island you can see the smoke rising up from the volcano Kilauea. The gases coming out of the volcano create a special kind of fog which the locals call "vog", for volcanic fog.
This is a picture of a smoking volcanic crater in Hawaii. This crater is familiarly seen from the Volcano House in the south of Hawaii, near the Kilauea volcano. In 2008, the Halema’uma’u crater vented sulfuric gas, which was seen from this satellite photo.

This is a picture of Hurricane Flossie, approaching the Hawaiian islands. You can see the Big Island of Hawaii in the upper left-hand corner of the image.
We have written many articles about Hawaii for Universe Today. Here's an article about sub-orbital flights from Hawaii, and here's an article about volcanoes in Hawaii.
If you'd like more resources about Hawaii, check out the USGS site about volcanoes on Hawaii.
We've also recorded an entire episode of Astronomy Cast about volcanoes. Listen here, Episode 141: Volcanoes, Hot and Cold
