Tumbling Spektr-R Rocket

Spektr-R Zenit 2 rocket tumbling from Ralf Vandebergh on Vimeo.

Ralf Vandebergh captured this unique show made by a Zenit rocket second stage. The rocket was recorded while it was tumbling as it passed through the field of Ralf’s 10 inch Newtonian telescope. This rocket launched the Russian Spektr-R radiotelescope.

“I think this is amazing footage of the tumbling behavior of a Zenit second stage (here from the Spektr-R launch last year). Image data is in the animation and it’s local time. Flashing was very high rate naked eye.”

is it possible that a rocket-stage can survive a g-force of 390 (calculated by using this formulae:

and 187 rpm given your value of 1 rotation/0.32 s

i mixed op radius with total length, so the result has to be divided by 2 => 180 à 190G.
