Richard S. Wright Jr. captured this photo on September 3rd, 2011 at 3:00 in the morning just as the shadow of Io (also seen to the left of Jupiter) was hitting the GRS.

“We had an unusually good night forecast for Central Florida, and I used Gas Giants (an iPhone app) to see if the GRS would be visible that night. To my surprise, I saw that Io would be casting a shadow across as well. I knew I had to try and capture it.”

Richard used the following equipments and specs:
Paramount MX mount
Orion 190mm f/5.3 Mak-Newt
Teleview 2X barlow
Imaging Source Firewire video camera w/IR filter.
Astro IIDC, Photoshop, TheSkyX Pro

Sorry for my ignorance but, the article mentions a few times something called a GSR, which i have never heard of, and am not having much luck with Google searches.

Apparently he was waiting for Io to ‘hit’ the GSR, and that he has an app to see if the GSR was visible.

My first guess would be that he meant to say GRS (Great Red Spot), but that cant be right as GSR has been written multiple times, and an editor would have quickly seen and corrected it.

Any ideas as to who or what a GSR is?

pretty sure they meant GRS, as they said they weren`t sure if gsr would be visible or not! Not to mention title of picture, which is jupiter, lo and great red spot.

Perhaps it’s “Great Spot of Redness”.

I had the same question, but surmised by the context that they must mean Great Red Spot, particularly with the statement “waited to see if the GSR (sic) would be visible”.
