Astrophoto: Pelican Nebula by Bill McLaughlin

Pelican Nebula by Bill McLaughlin

Bill McLaughlin took this photo in June 2004 at his backyard roll-off observatory in Central Oregon. He used a 14.5 inch RCOS Ritchey-Chrétien telescope mounted on an Astro-Physics 1200GTO. The camera was one of the prototype SBIG 11000M cameras that was on loan to him for testing by SBIG during that time.

“This is one of the few images for which I do not have the exposure times. I remember it was straight RGB as opposed to LRGB (which you can do on fairly bright objects like this).”

Check out Bill’s website for more photos.

I would like to add a correction. The image was taken in the summer of 2003, not June of 2004 as I told the editor. The data for this image was lost in an HD crash so all I had left was the image on my webpage. I was unsure of the date but was finally able to narrow it down by looking at dates for other images.

OK, another couple corrections. I must have been brain dead when I gave the editor the information. It was also not taken with my 14.5 RCOS scope and AP1200GTO.

It WAS taken with a (both now sold) AP155 (F7 with flattener) refractor and AP900 GTO mount.

Most of my confusion came from my lack of records on this image but some came from the fact that I have not had this equipment for some time and now use a Paramount for my mount and mostly the RCOS or Takahashi FSQ106 for optics
