Texas Wildfires Seen from the International Space Station

by Nancy Atkinson on September 6, 2011

Astronauts on board the space station have been seeing their share of natural disasters back on Earth, providing us all a unique, if not dramatic view of hurricanes and now the wildfires burning in Texas. This video includes view from both external cameras mounted on the International Space Station as well as handheld cameras from within the station.

Astronaut Ron Garan, one of the humans behind the cameras, said today during a press briefing they have been trying to share the experience of being in space with people on the ground, and that the images and videos they can take are different from those taken by a robotic satellite. “There is something to be said for looking out the window and spotting a fire because we happen to be here, and being able to take pictures. We’ve tried to share the feeling you get when you are up here, not just the views — not just the ones and zeroes on the digital media — but we try to capture the experience of what it is like to be here, and you can’t get that with a satellite image.”

The wildfires aside, that is just awesome. I mean, the fact that people are up in space with cameras and that view of the earth. Amazing stuff!
