The first is that tools are easily obtainable and depending on the level of involvement quite affordable. If you wanted to build a space ship for your private use or as an afternoon hobby it would be pretty implausible. There is the extraordinary cost of resources as well as the high level of expertise needed. Astronomy can use tools as simple as the naked eye or binoculars. All you need is a good star map and know where to look. For the most part everything you need can be found at local stores or hobby shops. However serious astronomers will need to be prepared to spend some money depending on the type of equipment needed.
The next great reason is that astronomy is pretty easy to pick up. A person who knows something about stars, planets, and constellations is well on their way to mastering the basics of astronomy. This makes pretty accessible to just about anyone who is willing to take the time to learn the needed information to become effective amateur astronomers. The most vital things to know are star positions, how to use star charts, and make basic calculations. Also knowing how to do research on past celestial events can help you make better observations.
Another benefit is the opportunity to make great discoveries. It is not uncommon for amateur astronomers to make new discoveries. The reason is even though Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences; space is a large place with plenty still to be discovered just in the night sky visible from Earth. There is also the fact that some events like comets and meteor showers can happen centuries apart. There is also the fact that new discoveries can be easily verified with more advance instrumentation. This part of astronomy is considered so important that some institutions give award to astronomers who make important observations.
We have written many articles about amateur astronomy for Universe Today. Here’s an article about astronomy telescopes, and here’s an article about Charon imaged by amateur astronomers.

We’ve also recorded an entire episode of Astronomy Cast all about Amateur Astronomy. Listen here, Getting Started in Amateur Astronomy.
