Spectacular View of Etna from the International Space Station

One of the most interesting phenomenon on our planet is volcanism. Our planet has been shaped by it and the forces behind it since its early formation. Despite the power of a volcano, humans have attempted to live near them for thousands of years. For the most part, the people who have lived in the area of a volcano have come to regret it. If you could ask the folks from Pompeii, I bet they would all agree. For a more modern reference, you could ask those living in Iceland and Northern Europe after the recent activity of Icelandic volcanoes.

Despite, or because of, the danger of a volcano many people are fascinated by images of an eruption. To help you find images form several different volcanoes, we have assembled a volcano image gallery here on Universe Today. Most of these can be used a wallpaper for your personal computer or laptop. If the image is not immediately usable as a wallpaper, then save it to the My Pictures area then you should be able to set as a background or screen saver.

Just for fun here are a few fun facts about the volcanoes that you can find in our volcano image gallery.

The smoke and ash plume erupted from Mt. Etna could be easily seen from space.

Many of the residents of Pompeii and the other cities around Mt. Vesuvius ignored early signs of eruption, much to their later dismay.

Despite warning from government officials and assistance relocating, some residents around Mt St. Helen’s decided to stay in their homes knowing they would die rather than leave their long-time homes.

Most of the islands in the Pacific Ocean are the tops of active undersea volcanoes.

These facts can not help do any justice to the photos in the volcano image gallery that we have compiled below. Hopefully, you find what your looking for and, as always, enjoy your research.
