Apollo 13 was the mission that was a tragedy avoided. The mission was on the verge of being fatal for all aboard, but disaster was avoided through the quick thinking of the crew. Books have been written and movies have been made, but the details are not always accurate. Hollywood will take is liberties. Before you jump into the links, here are a few interesting facts about the Apollo 13 mission.

It was to be the third mission to land on the lunar surface.

Engine shutdown occurred early because of pogo oscillations that were amplified by turbo-pump cavitation. Neither of these problems were the cause of the near-deaths of the crew, but both of those are great ancillary paths of research.

Duct tape played an important role in the crew’s survival.

Despite never detaching from the Command Module, the Lunar Module saved the lives of the astronauts aboard.
