Here are some irregular galaxy pictures. You can make any of these images into your computer desktop wallpaper. Just click on an image to enlarge it, and then choose “Set as Desktop Background”.
This is an amazing image of the I Zwicky 18 (lower left portion of the image), a dwarf irregular galaxy located 59 million light years away in the constellation Ursa Major. This was taken by the NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.
This is a nice photo of the NGC 1427A galaxy captured by the Hubble Space Telescope’s Advanced Camera for Surveys in January 2003. NGC 1427A is an irregular galaxy located in the constellation Eridanus.
Here’s a great view of the Large Magellanic Cloud from the NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope. The Large Magellanic Cloud is another example of an irregular galaxy. It is located near the earth at a distance of around 160,000 light years.
This is an amazing picture of the Small Magellanic Cloud taken by the NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope. This irregular galaxy is also near the earth, slightly farther than the Large Magellanic Cloud with a distance of approximately 200,000 light-years away.
This very nice image of the Messier 82 galaxy generated from the images acquired by the Hubble and Spitzer telescopes and the Chandra Observatory. The Messier 82 galaxy, also known NGC 3034, Cigar Galaxy or M82 is an irregular galaxy located in the constellation Ursa Major.
We have written many articles about irregular galaxies for Universe Today. Here’s an article about irregular galaxies, and here’s an article about the closest galaxy to the Milky Way.
If you’d like more info on irregular galaxies, check out Hubblesite’s News Releases on Galaxies, and here’s NASA’s Science Page on Galaxies.
We’ve also recorded an episode of Astronomy Cast about galaxies. Listen here, Episode 97: Galaxies.
