Newsletters from Astronomical Observatories

Have you ever wondered if there’s easy-to-read coverage of what the world’s leading astronomical observatories are up to, material that’s longer than the average Universe Today story, and less tied to Press Releases?

Well, assuming that you have the time for such pleasures (!), here are some that I’ve collected over the years, in the shape of regular PDF newsletters.

Don’t see your favorite observatory newsletter here? Write a comment, and share it with us!

European Southern Observatory’s Messenger.

Gemini’s Gemini Focus.

National Optical Astronomy Observatory/National Solar Observatory.

ASTRON (Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy).

Anglo-Australian Observatory.

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory has a newsletter, NRAO eNews but the last issue was October 2005 (my thanks to sjanowie for the correction).

Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes has a newsletter, but the last issue was December 2005.

There are lots of observatories which do not seem to ‘do’ regular PDF newsletters, e.g. W.M. Keck, Subaru, SDSS, and the South African Astronomical Observatory.

Also, none of the space-based observatories seem to go in for newsletters either, not Fermi, INTEGRAL , Swift, XMM-Newton, Chandra, GALEX, Hubble, Spitzer, WISE, Herschel, WMAP, Planck, …

Also, none of the non-photon astronomical observatories do either; not LIGO, IceCube, Pierre Auger, Milagro, …

The NRAO has updated their websites and *do* have a current newsletter here:

    http://www.nrao.edu/news/newsletters/

  • Jon Hanford

Thanks, Jean, for the story on newsletters from professional observatories. I regularly follow these, as some have quite interesting articles with astronomically relevant info not found in published journals (not to mention impressive illustrations!) like those above.

  • Jon Hanford

There is a LIGO newsletter available (last updated 2008) at: http://www.ligo.caltech.edu/LIGO_web/news/#newsletter

  • Robert Hollow

The Australia Telescope National Facility (now part of CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science) produces two newsletters annually. These are available as PDFs at:

Thanks Jon and Robert, and thanks too to Colin Johnston (Armagh Planetarium) for the email telling me about Astronotes, the planetarium’s PDF newsletter.
