Amazing: Scale of the Universe

[/caption]

Via the Bad Astronomer, check out this incredible interactive Flash animation from NewGrounds that provides a scale of the Universe, from the very small (0.0000000001 yoctometers) to as large as we know, the estimated size of the Universe. Click on the image, or here to access, and after it loads, use the slider at the bottom to zoom in and out. Gives you a new appreciation for all that’s out there, big and small!

  1. Good find…this is one of the better “universe scale” demonstrations out there.

My mind definitely can’t comprehend the scales. I swear I read an article somewhere that the human mind can only imagine and understand distances up to a certain limit. I forget the exact details.

  2. Absolutely cool and mind-boggling. A great demonstration. These are great as a way of representing the scale of the very small and very large…. I also watching the IMAX Cosmic Voyage to the power of 10.

  3. Awesome!

I like the comment that goes along with the star WOH G64, as well as the one with the water molecule. Clever.

Also, note that if you don’t like moving the slider with the mouse, you can also do it with the arrow keys; I find using the arrow keys smoother and easier to use.

  4. I passed the link around to my coworkers and family and it is unaminously appreciated. The demonstration is the best of its kind and humorous too. It’s great to have Universe Today to find these little gems.

  5. The physics kind of suck, as noted on BA. But it’s fun, personal, and educational on many levels, so it is to be recommended.
