Are We AloneSince man turned his attention towards the heavens, he has wondered ”Are we alone?”. Many astronomers, philosophers, and religious leaders alike have tried to answer that question to the satisfaction of the masses. All have failed in one aspect or another. Even the astronomers and scientists of today struggle with their explanations of the possibility of life elsewhere in the universe.

If you talk to any UFO enthusiast or conspiracy theorist, the answer is definitely yes, but our government is covering it up in the mistaken belief that the public can not handle the truth. Religious leaders tell us that God created the heavens and the Earth, but only put life on this one planet. Scientists struggle to find evidence from great distances. Who is right? I can not answer that question for you, but I can put forth a few theories of my own and try to show you some links to what is believed to be evidence.

Ask any good Christian ”Are We Alone?” and their patent answer is yes. The religious community is actually self-centered enough to think that God would only place life on one planet and see how it worked out. I have met some egotistical people before, but that takes the cake. Since God is all powerful and omnipotent, why would He only want to plant the seeds of life in one place? Our planet is fairly unique in its conditions, so life developed in one form here. Another planet would offer another unique opportunity for life to develop in a different form. Why wouldn’t God want to see this happen?

Asking a UFO conspiracy theorist ”are we alone?” will bring a resounding NO!!! They point to numerous pictures, videos, and the supposed crash at Roswell. All of it is pretty convincing evidence. The problem I have with their theory is how could the government truly cover up such a thing. Not that governments wouldn’t lie. The sheer number of people that would have to be involved is staggering. How often do a group of people keep a secret for long? Some one would have spilled the beans or stolen proof by now. Another thing that puzzles me is why haven’t any of those alien ships just landed and presented themselves to the public? Maybe the governments of the world are covering up about UFO’s because they haven’t figured out how to tax the aliens, yet.

The people I would trust the question of ” are we alone?” are the scientists who are struggling to prove the fact to be true. They do not postulate highly advanced beings or even carbon-based life. Simply, they are looking for micro-organisms, water, or any other proof in the universe. Science has been unlucky so far, but as telescopes, spacecraft, and related technologies advance, I believe that life will be found. What is to say they are looking in the right direction. Perhaps life developed on the farthest planets from the Sun and continues to develop on new planets as they cool enough to support it then dies off as each planet cools too much.

Here on Universe Today we offer a couple of great articles facing the question ”are we alone?”. One deals with a Vatican conference on the subject, another addresses whether meteorites could hold clues to alien life. Astronomy Cast offers two good episodes. One is about astrobiology and the other looks at the plethora of planets that astronomers have found throughout the Universe.
