Arch conservative Thatcher decided it was better to give people tax cuts so they could spend it on new stuff like satellite tv and vcr's. Having a broad based science infra structure (along with clean streets) was a casualty. We are still seeing the fall out from that 28 years later with UK big science funding in crisis including programs like Gemini, which itself was response to a tightening in funding where the UK made the decision to become a minor partner of the US rather than a major player in its own right as it had been.
Where's the vision gone?

In a good way, the UK has its head on straight. But in another way, manned spaceflight is the flagship for developed nations today. We should continue with robotic and communications technology but also leave space for manned flight, whether scientific or commercial.

The UK has its head on straight. People are put into space for entertainment, to appease the populace, to be gladiators at the circus. Unmanned programs do the real exploration and the real work.

I hope other countries abandon their wasteful manned programs and concentrate on unmanned scientific exploration.
