Hawaiian Man Files Lawsuit Against the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is set to go online in May of this year. This magnificent machine will accelerate particles and collide them at such high energies that scientists expect to make some of the biggest discoveries ever about the very small (exotic sub-atomic particles) and the very large (the structure of the Universe itself).

But not everyone is happy. Particle accelerators have always been the source of controversy; at the end of the day, we can only predict the outcome of the LHC experiments. But what if scientists have overlooked something? What if the theories are wrong? A guy living on the other side of the planet to the LHC believes the world may come to an end and he’s begun filing a lawsuit against the completion of the accelerator. The concern? A massive black hole might be created, or vast amounts of antimatter will destroy the Earth. And where’s the scientific basis for all this panic? Hmmm… didn’t think so…

Through fear that the LHC is going to unleash death and destruction on the world, Walter Wagner from Hawaii has filed a lawsuit against an impressive array of defendants. The U.S. Department of Energy, the Fermilab particle-accelerator near Chicago, CERN and the National Science Foundation (NSF) are all named.

Wagner and his associate Luis Sancho have a pretty dubious (and quite frankly, weak) argument against the LHC, as they describe in the lawsuit:

The compression of the two atoms colliding together at nearly light speed will cause an irreversible implosion, forming a miniature version of a giant black hole. [...] Any matter coming into contact with it would fall into it and never be able to escape. Eventually, all of earth would fall into such growing micro-black-hole, converting earth into a medium-sized black hole, around which would continue to orbit the moon, satellites, the ISS, etc.” Walter F. Wagner and Luis Sancho lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Honolulu.

There is no evidence to suggest that colliding particles will create a black hole that will swallow the planet. I do however like their description that the International Space Station will continue to orbit the Earth-mass black hole – at least we’ll have somewhere to hide as the rampaging black hole eats the ground from under us!

The credentials of the plaintiffs are also pretty sketchy. Wagner has worked in nuclear medicine and has a minor degree in physics from Berkley, but he has nothing more advanced than that. His colleague Sancho has an even more sketchy physics background.

Wagner wants the opening of the LHC to be delayed until further safety studies are carried out. Its cases like these that scientists have had to combat for many years. Unfounded predictions of the “end of the world” and fear of the unknown have been published only to be debunked through correct scientific thinking. If the world listened to alarmists such as Wagner and co, we would advance no further.

I for one hope that the LHC does produce micro-black holes. I hope that this time next year we’ll be looking in awe at images of particle tracks from the sensors at the LHC showing the point of creation and the point of evaporation of micro-black holes. Peering very closely we see particle emission as if from nowhere, the evaporating particles from the tiny event horizon. The image will be entitled Hawking Radiation Experiment.

Even if the accelerator energies are not high enough to create mini-black holes, thereby giving Stephen Hawking some experimental evidence for his radiation, we are pretty sure we’ll find some other exotic and exciting particles to help us understand our universe a little bit better. We might gain a better grasp of other dimensions, detect some exotic particles, and lets not forget the possibility of discovering the Higgs Boson.

If we give into the fear of the unknown, scientific advancement will be stopped in its tracks and we may be restricted to scratching at the surface of space-time and string theory, rather than physically proving its existence with tools like the LHC.

Well, fire it up. If we cant test our theories, how will we ever verify anything? This search for the Higgs boson is important to our understanding of the universe and could make possible major advances.

How many particle acceleraors have been brought online already? And we are all still here. Yes, we are bombarded by cosmic rays constantly, but we are still here.

If a mini black hole were to pass thru u right now, you would never know it. It would be much smaller than a normal atom, would it not? And how many energetic particles of normal size are streaming through you right now? Chances of a mini black hole growing in mass are practically irrelevant for us.

How many mini black holes have ever been observed? We cant even find any smaller than ,what, three times the mass of our sun?

This reads like a stock market chat room. There is always a bearish crank who delights in tormenting the true believers. And I may not have a pure math degree, but don’t you make black holes by putting a LOT of mass into a little space? That hadron-smashin’ gizmo can’t corral too much mass goin’ that fast, can it? It’s only 17 or so miles around, isn’t it? That 50-mile-circumference SSC they were gonna build down here by Waco would have made those hadron-thingies whiz around a lot faster than that puny LHC deal. Hey, if we’re gonna all get sucked into a black hole made from a tiny mass then Texas goes first, I say – bring back the SSC!! And QED can come down and make the down payment on his quintillion-dollar premium.

Lighten up FRANCIS. I love it.

“As far as the laws of Mathematics refer to reality , they are not certain ; and as far as they are certain , they do not refer to reality”
    -Albert Einstein

If there are no Mathematial certainties in the cosmos, only provisional descriptions of its varied phenomena , we must look beyond the cosmos for the ultimate , and find it there, if it is to be found.
By using the brute force way of colliding particles at high speeds to generate more unknown particles we are going in the wrong direction. There will be easier and far more sophisticated ways of obtaining the same knowledge , probably within ten years – just have patience…an advanced computer and quantum physics collider simulator will be available soon .
A higher form of Mathematics will simplify the quest , and you can’t see the forest for the trees by going in the wrong direction anyhow.

“God does not roll dice with the universe”
    -Albert Einstein

So what gives Scientists the right to roll dice with the universe ?

Brute force discovery methods can make Mother Nature upset and She is in control.

The supernatural does not and in fact can not exist! If a thing exists it is by virtue of its own reality part of the natural universe. I suspect QED is a true believer of one type or another and like all true believers has chosen faith over thought. Belief is the first step down the path of ignorance and religion nothing less than the complete surrender of ones reason to fantasy.

  • QED

    Billie Bob ;

I honestly think you and all your LHC groupies need to “Chill”.

You all need a tune up and a little help…

Stop playing back these mental fantasies about the mating orgies of all these quantum particles…

Transcendental Meditation is good , just select the right Mantra which fits your personality and take deep breaths while thinking … rrround and rround she goes …rround and rround she goes ….rround and rround…..

If someone is enabling you , remember you are …what you think and you are what you eat and you are who you associate with….
    Avoid all your enabling friends…

Take some online graduate courses in Analytical Mechanics as applied to the three body problem… or whatever it is you do,,

Check out the Big wheel at Jimmy Joes place..
Or, Its possible you all just haven’t played enough games of MARBLES as little “tykes”
or spent much real quality time at the local red neck pool hall in Texarkana playing eight ball or done enough serious duck pin bowling marathons at Tuffy Leeman’s house of Ducks or , for those of you who are not passive couch potatoes , attended enough stock car collider races in Tulsa ,Oklahoma or El Paso ,Texas where one can watch the racing cars go round and round and round and round and round and bang each other into the wall…

Who knows an unknown particle or black hole or two could be generated…thats for sure to happen in at least one of your possible participating multiple universes , so don’t forget to take your camera .

Get this thing out of your system and CHILL .. there is a real life waiting for you out there somewhere in the universe…You can eject this collider monkey off your back !

Ultimately , there is a twelve step program around the corner if nothing else works to calm you down,,.You can say my name is Billy Bob and I’m a collider-holic .and been collider free since they cancelled the really Big One in Sugarland Texas way back in 2006…..

The probability that LHC produces black hole is very low ( less than 0.01%), since the theoretical calculation requires “very large extra-dimensions” (0.1mm-1nm) which is almost impossible because we know there doesn’t exist such things. On the other hand, the amount of energy needs to create a black hole is around 3-4 TeV which is the right level for LHC so most physicists have too much dreams about it such that it becomes a delusion from reality. The next level is around 8 PeV, I think this is the right one. The problem is that it takes a very long long time to build a particle collider at that energy level (2050s is the earliest).

  • sapiens at risk

66 thousand phsicists work around the black hole factory and related industries, do
you expect them to close down their livehood?
what worries more is the systematic lies, and the arrogance and dismissive attitude of people like that NY professor. he must know for sure that cosmic rays are exactly the opposite of
dark matter: light fast particles vs. heavy slow ones. By reductio ad absurdum if A is the opposite of b B, cosmic rays, will never become A, dark matter. Today we know strange matter will be stable at cern with the energy used. black hole evaporation has never found and contradicts the laws of causality (travel to the past) and hence the laws of thermodynamics (the hot source gets hotter instead of cooling down and evaporating our world). Physicists have made all the mass weapons of destruction since saint galileo of ballistics to saint nobel of the dynamite to saint einstein of the atomic bomb, and now they are all siding with the guys that are gonna make cosmic bombs? Evil is indeed the opposite of Live. Problem is they never have been judged. In Nuremberg we fought to bring them here. It is time for mankind to protect itself of this kind of scientific terrorists, which get our dollars. Indeed, what shoudl surprise us is that this is not taken by our politicians but have to be individual citizens who raise the issue.

    To Qed,

Lightening, tornados and hurricanes have always been a death threat from Mother Nature…screw that bitch.

  • QED

The expected gain or value in NOT producing a mini black hole which grows into a medium or large black hole is infinite unless one has a Death Wish for every one on Earth.
But who really can say the probability of the LHC collider producing a mini black hole which could get larger in a few years , is zero ?
One could argue that the testing of the Atomic Bomb was necessary to end World War II and save a few million lives , but even this decision would have been Dead Wrong if a chain reaction had occured and destroyed the atmosphere.
Besides , since we agree that Mother Nature weeds us out periodically with Mass Extinctions , we don’t need Obsessive Compulsive Mad Scientists to help her along.
Also , Mother Nature just wipes out 75 % of all species every 250 million years or so , but She always leaves us with starter seeds of some kind to regroup and start over.
Who knows , maybe Mother Nature decides its time to start over periodically , because the current major species of those times exhibit character defects and the potential of running amok and of wiping out 100% of all species and the whole Earth itself.
Maybe , Mother Nature gives a time out to the dominant species…just a thought .. not a sermon.
Actually , I don’t believe in organized Religion but lean towards Buddhist principles.
However , The Old testament of the Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls and some other references from different cultures including the “Annunakai” , mention the displeasure of the “Elohim” or “Gods ” or “Jaweh” or “Jehova” , with mankind and so they caused the Big Flood and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorah and other calamities.
There are similarities in the deeds of “Thoth” the Egyptian God , “Quetzalcotyl” the Aztec God and “Vericocha” the God of the people in what is now Peru and Ecuador who were there long before the Incas.
All of these so called “Gods” were said to have taught the knowledge of Mathematics and Astronomy and even that of Ethics to the ancients and in many of the ancient cultures , a reference is made to major disasters destroying much of their civilization.
Actually , I think “Organized Religion” is responsible for most of the world suffering including what is happening today in the Middle East and Bosnia and happened in Ireland and Yugoslavia (for a thousand years)… Catholics against Protestant s, Shiites against Sunnis. The Pope and the Catholic Church held his own crusade in the Langedoc region of Southern France in the 12th century against the Cathars exterminating most of them . and then in the 14th century in 1307 King Phillip III and the Pope tried to exterminate the Knights Templar .
I thing that some , if not all of this ,has a high probability of being true , even though these books were written by humans.
So , maybe “God ” or “Mother Nature” , gets upset with all these atrocities and throws a Big curve ball whammy at us now and then , so far she has never removed the whole Earth we are standing on by creating a black hole.
When the Dinosaurs became extinct mammals were given a chance resulting eventually with our chance at becoming a “Contenda”.
So all you LHC groupies have a chance to step up to the plate now and not mess with “Mother Nature” .
The way some of us act , any Aliens passing by . would not even make a pit stop here on this planet.
If they did , they would probably communicate with Ants or Dolphins instead of Homo Sapiens.
Why do I always encounter Mental Midgits …. there must be intelligent life out there somewhere who can present first class professional arguments .
Many of you LHC groupies are definitely not enlightened and need to go to a mental boot camp in basic logic and the use of proper language and where you may just possibly receive a general tune up.

  • Milan

If I was suing the LHC consortium I would argue that the money is better spent on cancer research, poverty, hunger etc. than hunting for the Higgs Boson. Of what use to humanity is knowing whether Higgs exists or not. I’m not against testing physics theories, but perhaps we should get more immediate and pressing issues in order first rather than confirming/denying something that is of no use to most people every day.

Big Bang machine could destroy Earth

    by Jonathan Leake
    Science Editor°
A NUCLEAR accelerator designed to replicate the Big Bang is under investigation by international physicists because of fears that it might cause “perturbations of the universe” that could destroy the Earth. One theory even suggests that it could create a black hole.

Brookhaven National Laboratories (BNL), one of the American government’s foremost research bodies, has spent eight years building its Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC)on Long Island in New York state. A successful test-firing was held on Friday and the first nuclear collisions will take place in the autumn, building up to full power around the time of the millennium.

Last week, however, John Marburger, Brookhaven’s director, set up a committee of physicists to investigate whether the project could go disastrously wrong. It followed warnings by other physicists that there was a tiny but real risk that the machine, the most powerful of its kind in the world, had the power to create “strangelets” – a new type of matter made up of sub-atomic particles called “strange quarks”.
The committee is to examine the possibility that, once formed, strangelets might start an uncontrollable chain reaction that could convert anything they touched into more strange matter.
The committee will also consider an alternative, although less likely, possibility that the colliding particles could achieve such a high density that they would form a mini black hole. In space, black holes are believed to generate intense gravitational fields that suck in all surrounding matter. The creation of one on Earth could be disastrous.

Professor Bob Jaffe, director of the Centre for Theoretical Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who is on the committee, said he believed the risk was tiny but could not be ruled out. “There have been fears that strange matter could alter the structure of anything nearby. The risk is exceedingly small but the probability of something unusual happening is not zero.”

Construction of the 350m RHIC machine started eight years ago and is almost complete. On Friday scientists sent the first beam of particles around the machine – but without attempting any collisions.

Inside the collider, atoms of gold will be stripped of their outer electrons and pumped into one of two 2.4-mile circular tubes where powerful magnets will accelerate them to 99.9% of the speed of light.

The ions in the two tubes will travel in opposite directions to increase the power of the collisions. When they smash into each other, at one of several intersections between the tubes, they will generate minuscule fireballs of superdense matter with temperatures of about a trillion degrees – 10,000 times hotter than the sun. Such conditions are thought not to have existed – except possibly in the heart of some dense stars – since the Big Bang that formed the universe between 12 billion and 15 billion years ago.

Under such conditions atomic nuclei “evaporate” into a plasma of even smaller particles called quarks and gluons. Theoretical and experimental evidence predicts that such a plasma would then emit a shower of other, different particles as it cooled down.
Among the particles predicted to appear during this cooling are strange quarks. These have been detected in other accelerators but always attached to other particles.
RHIC, the most powerful such machine yet built, has the ability to create solitary strange quarks for the first time since the universe began.
BNL confirmed that there had been discussion over the possibility of “perturbations in the universe”. Thomas Ludlam, associate project director of RHIC, said that the committee would hold its first meeting shortly.

John Nelson, professor of nuclear physics at Birmingham University who is leading the British scientific team at RHIC, said the chances of an accident were infinitesimally small – but Brookhaven had a duty to assess them. “The big question is whether the planet will disappear in the twinkling of an eye. It is astonishingly unlikely that there is any risk – but I could not prove it,” he said.

  • The Empiric Skanker

Scientist taking the risk of making the atom bomb DID cause chaos, but not chaos as in supercloission chainreation whatnot. It’s cration killed thousands of people and left a whole lot more disfigured and misformed.

Huge experiments like these are pointless. Rather spend the billion of dollars on curing cancer, or creating clean energy, or saving an extinct spesies, or stopping an all out civil war in Africa.

As for global warming not being true, go to Indonesia and see the Islands dissapearing, and the poor dudes carrying sand on their back to stop their village from being flooded. Or just go to the beach, assuming you know where that is, and that you actually ever go outside.

You shouldn’t play with something if you can’t clean up after yourself.

I’m sorry but exactly what scientific breakthrough is this really going to achieve.

I’ve read comments on those against and those who dismiss those against the LHC, but the facts are that it serves not general purpose; therefore the experiment SHOULD BE STOPPED NOW!!!

Science, and scientific studies should be being done in service to mankind; we should be striving to make real concrete breakthroughs in medical science, creating new viable technologies, and new forms of propulsion.

When there are any unknown variables to an experiment, they should be explored fully, but it is people like this, people who are supposed to be scientists who still at the very core of their being, are trying to get themselves the history books, for fame, nothing more, nothing less.

We are supposed to serve the future, and this puts the future at risk, even if this nothing happens now with this actual test, they will continue to push this until they make a mistake, it always happens, we are humans, it’s what we do best.

They must be stopped, and they must be stopped now, BY ANY AND ALL MEANS NECESSARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • pavja2

quite frankly it is too late now to do anything. Still just another interesting fact scientist
Otto Rossler, a retired German chemist, said.

‘Nothing will happen for at least four years,’ he said. ‘Then someone will spot a light ray coming out of the Indian Ocean during the night and no one will be able to explain it.

‘A few weeks later, we will see a similar beam of particles coming out of the soil on the other side of the planet. Then we will know there is a little quasar inside the planet.’

Prof Rossler said that as the spinning-top-like quasar devoured the world from within, the two jets emanating from it would grow and catastrophes such as earthquakes and tsunamis would occur at the points they emerged from the Earth.

‘The weather will change completely, wiping out life, and very soon the whole planet will be eaten in a magnificent scenario – if you could watch it from the moon. A Biblical Armageddon. Even cloud and fire will form, as it says in the Bible.’

  • pavja2

“According to Mayan calculations, the current cycle of the world is due to end in December 2012.”
